New lights add productivity at Total Medical Supply
SpringLakePark– For staff at Total Medical Supply, seeing is believing. After a recent lighting upgrade, employees are now able to read labels more easily when picking product for their customer orders. “We can see twice as good and the new lights make our job a lot easier,” remarked one employee.
As a new member of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, Total Medical Supply (TMS) received a call from Energy Smart this summer asking if program staff could help the company with business energy efficiency. Kris Bjork, president of TMS, wanted to know more.
Energy Smart staff conducted an on-site consultation in August, and facilitated a lighting audit in October. The energy use data collected pointed to significant energy savings potential for TMS if the company were to pursue a lighting upgrade in its warehouse. The work was completed in November, and the company will start saving energy and reducing costs immediately.
“We’re so busy, and for someone to take the time to call me and take care of the whole process for us was great,” says Kris Bjork, president.
The company received a rebate of $2,070 from its electric utility Xcel Energy and is expected to save more than $725 in annual energy costs.

Reminder: Replace T12 fluorescents before incentives disappear
T12 fluorescents, the thicker, less-efficient fluorescent tube lights, are being phased out by the federal government and will become harder to purchase by mid-2012. Businesses and organizations should replace any T12s in their facilities before that happens.
Already, some Minnesota utilities are planning to discontinue rebates for replacing T12s with the more-efficient T8 or T5 fluorescents. Xcel Energy, for instance, will end T12 retrofit rebates after 2012 but is offering a 50% bonus rebate to commercial customers that replace T12s before March 31, 2012.
