Energy savings can be achieved in domestic hot water systems in several different ways. Older systems can be upgraded with newer systems that have less standby losses. Most water heaters come with a label which shows an estimated annual cost which can be compared to new units. Hot water pipes should also be insulated to reduce heat loss in the distribution system and low flow devices can be installed to reduce the amount of water used. Bathroom sinks and showerheads are both good areas for low flow devices. Also making sure hot water temperatures are set to the proper levels can help maintain an energy efficient system.
