Energy Smart Tip - Control Space Heater Use

Space heaters are energy inefficient, using 1000 Watts - or one kilowatt - to operate. They can also pose a safety risk if improperly operated.

Tips for Controlling Space Heater Energy Use:

  • Encourage employees to minimize the time they run space heaters. Each hour the employee runs the space heater costs about ten cents. Five space heaters run all day for 3 months could cost $240 every winter.
  • Plug space heaters in to a motion-controlled power strip to minimize time the heater is on when nobody is nearby.
  • If employees perceive a need for additional heat, it likely means that the HVAC system needs attention. Be sure that heating vents are unblocked, windows and doors are shut, and that the thermostat is set to 68 degrees. Call your HVAC service person to inspect and repair the heating and ventilation system.
  • Choose energy-saving space heater models that use fewer than 1000 Watts.
